POETRY ARTICLES & ESSAYS PERSIAN

All this nonsense about the trees
I refuse to believe it’s their fault that
The kids hanging from branches like bats
Grew up one by one and then
Flew away for good

All this nonsense about the fish
I refuse to believe that they’re dying
Yet their flaps slow down
And they sleep forever atop the water with their
Eyes wide open

I can’t remember the seasons anymore
It is all a blur and the colours are different
Do I use the ‘U’ in colour now that I’m in Britain?
How do you say Britain in Persian?
بریتانیا؟

I understand the trees and I understand the fish
They understand me too
Whether in Isle of Mull or in Valldemossa
I understand but the friends I no longer have
The new ones laughing with inquisitive eyes
Or the ones that I glimpse on a scroll down

All this nonsense about the trees too static
Fish too fidgety
And so what if I want to be the water
If am the wind
So what if I don’t explain what that means
In English or in فارسی

I want you to let me be
But do I care if they
don’t understand that I’m
Not an uprooted tree
Nor a fish out of water
I am the wind and the water
I want him with me
And that is the only way I will
Remember the seasons.
